jacob rosenberg book epicenter 2nd edition

EPICENTER — 2nd Edition is Jacob Rosenberg’s self-published monograph on Embarcadero Plaza (EMB), one of the defining meeting points of early-1990s street skateboarding in San Francisco. Rosenberg photographed and filmed the plaza between 1990 and 1993, and this second edition brings the project together in a single 284-page volume.

The first half combines essays by Ted Barrow, Ph.D., Anthony G. Pappalardo and Kevin Wilkins with interviews conducted by Rosenberg with Mike Carroll, Rick Ibaseta, James Kelch, Eric Merrell and Steve “Shrewgy” Ruge. Historic images of the plaza from 1926 and 1971, supplied by the San Francisco Public Library, add further context to the site and its history.

The second half is image-led: 50 drum-scanned film photographs shot at Embarcadero — including 6 newly added archival images — plus 594 rare, unseen and iconic video frame grabs arranged across six full-bleed double-page spreads.

The physical edition is limited to 1,000 copies and finished as a sewn-bound hardcover with foil blocking, debossed text, a tipped-in image of the Vaillancourt Fountain and maroon-dipped page edges. A postcard reproducing a commissioned painting of the Plaza by Eric Merrell is included.
