Shut Skateboards: New York street skating from the beginning

Shut Skateboards started in New York City in 1986 through Rodney Smith and Bruno Musso. At the time, many mainstream boards still reflected California's vert-oriented skate scene, while New York skaters were developing their own approach on curbs, banks and concrete streets. Shut set out to produce decks suited to that environment.

Its early team included skaters such as Jefferson Pang, Sean Sheffey and Chris Pastras, with a visual identity shaped by urban graffiti. The project went through changes and pauses as its founders became involved with the history of Zoo York, before Shut returned in the 2000s. At BUD, the company represents a formative East Coast voice: a skateboard brand created by a local scene rather than imported from an established industry centre.
