There Skateboards grew from the creative world of Oakland artist and skater Jeffrey Cheung. Through the Unity project, launched in 2017 with Gabriel Ramirez, Cheung helped establish spaces where queer and trans skateboarders could skate together and feel represented. There takes that community-minded approach into a skateboard brand with its own team, films and distinctive decks.
Cheung's expressive figures and unapologetic drawings give the boards a visual identity that is easy to recognise. The importance of There, though, goes beyond a graphic style: it shows how skateboarding can make space for people whose experiences have often been overlooked. At BUD Skateshop, There combines genuine street-skating roots with an artistic voice and a broader idea of who gets to belong in a skate scene.
