The Killing Floor: John Vitale’s art-driven skateboards

John Vitale founded The Killing Floor after years spent working in and running skate shops. Based in Portland, Oregon, he began the project around 2010 because he wanted board graphics to feel more adventurous and personal. His background in painting, collage and visual art shaped the company from the start.

The name comes from Howlin’ Wolf's blues song Killing Floor, a fitting reference for a label that often draws on music and the emotional side of skating. Psychedelic imagery, unexpected colour choices and photographic elements run through the decks. Skate footage featuring riders such as Josh Anderson and Andrew Gray completes the picture. The Killing Floor is a reminder of what smaller skate companies can do when the person creating the boards retains genuine artistic control.
