Zoo York: New York street skating in its own words

Founded in 1993 by Rodney Smith, Eli Morgan Gesner and Adam Schatz, Zoo York gave New York street skaters a major voice at a time when the industry still looked largely towards California. Its name recalls an older local skate and graffiti crew, and that connection to the city shaped its identity from the start. Subway platforms, rough sidewalks, music and street art became part of the message.

The influential Mixtape video captured this cross-pollination of skateboarding and hip-hop, with riders including Harold Hunter. Zoo York’s boards, logos and clothing carry an unmistakable East Coast visual language. BUD celebrates the label as an important chapter in skateboard history: a company that treated the city itself as the setting, soundtrack and subject of skate culture.
