Western Edition was started in San Francisco in 1999 by Ian Johnson and Kent Uyehara, whose connection to FTC helped root the company in the local skate scene. Johnson’s illustrations soon gave the decks a distinctive signature, drawing particularly on his interest in jazz musicians and the visual language of portraiture. This art direction became a defining part of the brand.
San Francisco skateboarding has always been about more than tricks: its hills, neighbourhoods and local friendships have shaped entire generations. Western Edition captures that cultural atmosphere through carefully composed board graphics and a deeply personal visual sensibility. At BUD, the label stands apart as a meeting point between skate history, drawing and music, proving that a deck can carry a story well beyond its shape.
