Vans: from Anaheim rubber soles to skateboarding icons

Vans opened its doors in Anaheim, California, in 1966. Founded by Paul and Jim Van Doren with partners, the company introduced the shoe later known as the Authentic. Southern California skaters quickly appreciated its sticky outsole and sturdy construction, making Vans part of the scene before skate footwear had become a separate industry. In 1976, Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta helped develop the Era.

The Old Skool, Slip-On and Sk8-Hi followed, each finding a lasting place in skateboarding and street culture. Modern skate-specific constructions build on those familiar shapes with materials and support selected for skating. At BUD, Vans is not simply a recognisable sneaker name. It is a company whose history can be traced through some of skateboarding's most important decades, from backyard pools to today's street sessions.
