Toy Machine was founded in 1993 by professional skateboarder and artist Ed Templeton. The company’s identity is inseparable from his hand-drawn world: strange monsters, the Sect characters, deliberately rough illustrations and a mischievous sense of humour. Its deck graphics have always felt like an extension of an artist’s imagination rather than a response to passing trends.
Video releases were just as important in establishing that identity. Welcome to Hell and Jump Off a Building became influential skate films, introducing riders whose personalities matched the company’s unusual visual language. Teams have changed over time, but the central idea has stayed consistent: make boards with character, give artwork real importance and keep skateboarding unpredictable. Toy Machine clothing carries many of the same monsters and illustrations seen on its decks.
