Thrasher was launched in San Francisco in 1981 by Fausto Vitello and Eric Swenson. At a time when many people thought skateboarding was finished, the magazine focused on the skaters who kept going: empty pools, backyard ramps, street spots, punk music and the characters behind the sessions. Its voice was deliberately rougher and more direct than conventional sports coverage.
Through photographs, interviews and videos, Thrasher became part of skateboarding’s collective memory. Its Skater of the Year award, the unpredictable King of the Road adventures and the ‘Skate and Destroy’ attitude helped shape the way skateboarding sees itself. The gothic masthead and flame lettering later became iconic graphics on T-shirts and hoodies, but their roots remain firmly tied to the magazine.
