Santa Cruz Skateboards: a California skate icon

Santa Cruz Skateboards was established in California in 1973 within NHS, the business created by Richard Novak, Doug Haut and Jay Shuirman. What began among surfers making boards became a defining part of modern skateboarding’s early development. Few skateboard names have such a long and recognisable history.

A major reason is the artwork. Artist Jim Phillips created the Screaming Hand in 1985, turning a blue shouting hand into one of skateboarding’s most enduring images. The familiar Dot logo is another link to the company’s Californian heritage. Over the decades Santa Cruz has connected distinctive board graphics with different shapes, generations of riders and clothing collections. Its visual language carries the energy of old-school skateboarding without belonging only to the past.
