Bones Bearings traces its roots to George Powell's search for better skateboard bearings in the early 1980s. He worked with a Swiss manufacturer to adapt high-quality components to the impacts and maintenance needs of skating. The resulting Bones Swiss line became one of the best-known names in skate hardware.
Powell later developed REDS as a more affordable alternative, applying lessons learned from the premium bearings. Removable shields, suitable retainers and lubrication all contribute to consistent rolling and easier cleaning. Bones is important because it treats bearings as purpose-built skate components rather than generic industrial parts placed in wheels. The choice between Swiss and REDS reflects different priorities, but both are connected to the brand's long technical history.
