Alien Workshop: an outsider vision from Ohio

Alien Workshop began in Dayton, Ohio, in 1990, deliberately outside skateboarding's California centre. Chris Carter and Mike Hill built a company whose graphics and videos drew on science fiction, unexplained phenomena and unusual visual storytelling. Its distance from the industry mainstream became part of its identity.

The early film Memory Screen, followed by Timecode, showed how atmospheric editing could shape a skate brand as powerfully as the skating itself. Rob Dyrdek, Josh Kalis and Fred Gall were among the riders who helped define the Workshop's world. Alien Workshop decks remain linked to those strange graphics, inventive films and the independent spirit of Midwest street skateboarding.
